Pantone Founder graduate of Hofstra University

Just found out today in my graphic design 2 class that the founder of Pantone, Lawrence Herbert was a graduate of Hofstra University. He graduated with a double major in biology and chemistry. His plan was to go on to medical school, but in 1956 he began working for Pantone on a part-time basis and became so intrigued with his work that he scrapped his idea of pursuing his studies as a physician.

"If I Knew Then What I Know Now"

Design Discussions on Students and Schools on the core77 website gives advice to current design students.

The discussion gives advice to students just starting out. It asks designers who have been out of school for a while to to share what they have learned and to explain their own, "If I knew then what I know now" story.

1. Spend a good amount of time in the studio, so much of what you learn in design classes is from other students. However seek inspiration else where.

2. Sketch more. Sketching allows you to uncover your ideas, and the more accuratly you can do this the more effective designer you can become.

3. Focus on the quality of your concepts, and not just the quality of your computer skills. Instead of spending too many hours in the lab trying to create the perfect effects, make sure that your concept is refined and a simpler more efficent solution will work.

4. Intern - You will gain experience that you are not able to recieve in the class room, you get hands on and a real idea of what working in the industry is like.

5. Enter Competitions - you are competing against other students, allows you to make contacts, create work for your portfolio.

6. Communication skills - take presenting seriously and focus on what you can learn from it. Being able to communicate will allows you to explain you ideas better and what you are thinking and allows people a greater understanding of your work.

Coroflot Portfolio

Just wanted to share my portfolio as posted on coroflot.com and to get the opinion of the class as to which pieces should be displayed in the portfolio. I want to include only my strongest pieces and to take down some of the work that does not show the best of my design abilities without removing too much.

Classmate Stereotypes

Classic designertypes shown above

Some of the Stereotypes are, 'The Space Cadet', 'The Lady', 'The Dude', 'The Chosen One'

I liked this article because even though they are stereotypes and accurate I felt as though i could relate to two of the characters. The Lady always points her concepts to a female audience.

They said that this was good though as you understand who your user is or even why it's an important thing to comprehend. She designs for a defined user, which is an important step in the design process that can help immensely in creating effective solutions.

Thought it would be interesting for the class to take a look at the article and see if they fit into one of the stereotypes, you might learn something about yourself!

Micro Piglets

Micro Piglets

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOb18fFCfKQ

Micro Piglets are the new pets of the future...they have become a craze in the UK and are going for only $700. They make great pets...they are just like dogs...very loveable and smart. Apart from they are easier than dogs...they only eat twice a day and need lots of water...they dont need to be walked either..they are very content just hanging out in the house. These little micro piglets are bread so they wont be over 14 inches in height.

William Gibson

William Gibson - predicted the internet before it came out - he says that google is the best example of cyber space and google has everted the physical earth

William Ford Gibson (born March 17, 1948) is an American-Canadian writer who has been called the "noir prophet" of the cyberpunk subgenre of science fiction.[16] Gibson coined the term "cyberspace" in his short story "Burning Chrome" and later popularized the concept in his debut novel, Neuromancer (1984). In envisaging cyberspace, Gibson created an iconography for the information age before the ubiquity of the Internet in the 1990s.[17] He is also credited with predicting the rise of reality television and with establishing the conceptual foundations for the rapid growth of virtual environments such as video games and the Web.

Having changed residence frequently with his family as a child, Gibson became a shy, ungainly teenager who often read science fiction. After spending his adolescence at a private boarding school in Arizona, Gibsondodged the draft during the Vietnam War by emigrating to Canada in 1968, where he became immersed in thecounterculture and after settling in Vancouver eventually became a full-time writer. He retains dual citizenship.[18] Gibson's early works are bleak, noir near-future stories about the effect of cybernetics andcomputer networks on humans – a "combination of lowlife and high tech".[19] The short stories were published in popular science fiction magazines. The themes, settings and characters developed in these stories culminated in his first novel, Neuromancer, which garnered critical and commercial success, virtually initiating the cyberpunk literary genre.

THE FRACTAL PROFESSION

Product Design - automobiles, computers, furniture

Controller vs Facilitator - Controllers are in films, everything is hyper controlled, everything is layed out in exact positioning, the designer controls every little aspect of the project.

Facilitator - designer simply makes a frame and the community fills the grid. inside the frame is uncontrollable live feed by people filled with tweets etc. It is best to have a mixture of both facilitator and controllers. Companys today want the communities feedback to to help them know what the public want.

Tweets - write about your observations, have to be interesting tweets.

Read Wide and Write Narrow

Build Your Network - give you more options and choices

Learn to work with "people you dont like" - this is what leaders d0 - figure out how to sit with these kind of people
