iphone and verizon

Apple is finally making an iphone version for Verizon Wireless that will be sold early in the new year. Their deal with AT&T is finally coming to an end which in turn is intensifying the competition with Google Inc based phones.

Apple is estimated to sell 40 million iPhones in the world this year. However there is competition pressure in the U.S. from other Verizon phones promoted by verizon running Android software.

Apple plans to begin mass producing the new iPhone by the end of the year and the phone would resemble the iPhone 4 currently sold by AT&T, but would be based on an alternative wireless technology used by Verizon, these people said.

Tiger Tweets

I decided to blog out Tiger Woods' twitter page as I wanted to do a little research in how he is posting tweets and communicating with his fans and the general public. When such a scandal is released with in the Media and Sports marketing world it is necessary for Tiger Woods to apologize to fans, admit the wrong doing, communicate well and follow up. The tweets shown on his twitter is Tiger Woods' way of following up with his fans to try to regain some of his credibility as an athlete and a person.

Glimmer

What first attracted me to this book was the design and color on the front. The use of rainbow streaking color across the words is very effective. "How design can transform your life, and maybe even the world"...These are the words on the front cover which are very captivating and pulls the audience in making them want to read more.

Take Breaks!

Graphic Designers make sure to take your breaks while working! sitting at your desk ignoring the tingling and numbing feeling in your arm, hand or shoulder should not be ignored! Carpal Tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve running from your forearm into the hand is stressed and needs to be relaxed. Carpal tunnel syndome is caused by the compression of the key nerve in the wrist.

It is important to take breaks every hour or so that you are sitting at a desk and staring at the computer. I feel that I need to take breaks when my wrist starts to hurt and wanted to do research on carpal tunnel syndrome.

For more information on prevention look at this website:

Richard Prince

Richard Prince is an american painter and photographer that uses the style of appropriated images to create his art. Prince's most famous and recognizable work was the image above of the marlboro man riding into the horizon. This is one of my favorite images as it represents America and the ideal of freedom. The rephotographed image of the cowboy above was sold for over 1 million dollars at Sothebys auction house. Prince created a whole series called the cowboy series that represents American masculinity.

Other series of collages and photographs that he has done includes gangs, biker chicks and cars. Although his work is very controversial I believe that he has a true talent and am a huge fan of his work

PIMP MY LIFE - Anna Akbari

Anna Akbari is a sociologist, entrepreneur, consultant, thinker, connector and writer. She is an extremely talented and motivated individual and was an inspiration to me and the rest of the class. Throughout the speech Akbari discussed the two main themes of identity construction and image management. One of Akbari's projects was 'The Hair Chronicles'. This was a test as a way of transforming identity with hair. The project brings up the question of authenticity and is authenticity necessary with design.

Akbari sees human identity in many different lights. She believes that we all wear masks and that all of the masks that we wear are real. We have a collection of masks, not just one authentic self, that is not real. Akbari jokes about having multiple personality disorder (MPD). She loves to dress up and do experiments in dressing up as different kinds of people. One example of a person who displays different identity images is Ralph Lichnich, otherwise known as Ralph Lauren. Ralph is a jewish man from the bronx, he was a son of immigrants and has a very different identity to which he has built his empire on, his story is a true success story.

Another topic of discussion was facebook and how it allows people to view and observe other peoples behavior. We truely do live in the public eye, where our individual lives are displayed for all to see on the internet, allowing the option of judgement. Today there are alot of privacy issues with social networking sites including facebook.

Other social networking sites such as twitter and blogging websites allow people to have a voice and be heard. These websites also allow us to be in multiple places at once.

second life - look up - avatars - you create your identity - virtual world

Akbari is an exceptional writer. She is also interested in ethnographic exploration which is a way of testing audience believability. Anna tried on different identities and dressed up as a homeless person, preppy school girl, and tourist in NYC.

The class was also guided on our future plans with jobs and internship opportunities. She explained that our intellectual paths may be windy, however that is ok. Akbari herself went to alot of liberal arts schools and began by studying Sociology. Akbari's education of her liberal arts studies taught her how to think, how to learn and be a well-rounded person.

Three important strategic self presentation tactics are Think, Write, Speak. Design Embodied means you can design who you are and gives you the power to fashion yourself to fit in and design yourself, designing your physical identity. People are viewing your appearance and identity even if you don't care. Three main things to aim to be are confidence, positivity and professionalism; all three of these are very important in interviews and as a way to be in life and at your job. One thing that Akbari stresses is how she likes people who are curtious. Another tip we learned is the importance of your quality of writing. If you know how to write you are valuable in any context.

NY Creative Intern event at the Wix Lounge

The event in the city at the Wix Lounge was held as a way for students looking to intern to mix and mingle with creative professionals and network. My goal for the night was to give away as many business cards as possible to get my name out there and to not miss any career opportunities that may come my way.

At first I felt it was hard to meet people, however after a little while I loosened up and found it easier to talk to people. I was approaching people and people were approaching me.

One of the most interesting people I met was Sean O'Kane. Sean was a photographer who worked for the magazine, InStyle. Sean was also a Hofstra graduate of 2008 and I spoke to him for some time.

Among others I met and exchanged business cards with was a woman named Brielle Maxwell, founder of Live with Design and Phi Pham, founder of Community Lab.

Cooool laptop cases

Laptop accoutrements have run the gamut from cringe-worthy graffiti decals to chuckle-worthy monster sleeves and everything in between.

One laptop case that we found especially notable is from Etsy-newcomerHelek Studio, an industrial design duo from Holon Institute of Technology in Tel Aviv. Their recently-launched Lady D. collection takes inspiration from those beloved granny wallets and rejuvenates them as the casing for oversize electronics, from your kindle to your iPad to your MacBook. (You can also contact them if you need an oddly-sized device case that you'd like them to custom-make.)

So far, their camping-esque hookah bag is the only product that we can't seem to place in the context of the rest of their Etsy store, but you can definitely take a peek at their other Lady D. offerings here.

Bathroom Design

Dutch designer Bo Reudler and company were recently invited to take part in a restoration project in a 19th century house near Amsterdam. The designers were challenged to bring a touch of contemporary design flair to the antique bathroom interior whilst retaining some of the character and features of the original.

Most modern bathrooms are shrines to function and sterility. This design sought to bring the space alive. Drawing heavily on natural forms, the copper pipes are left exposed and unfinished, to green with time and use—along with the copper sink and floral tile details. The ceiling's cornicing, playing with classical interior features, gives the impression of water dripping upwards as you kick back in the antique bathtub.

Hillbilly Hat

Sure it's a bit hillbilly, but I like the idea of the MasterVision Cap Light, which gives you hands-free illumination without having to strap on a headlamp. Choose between three or five LED lights. If you're the type that's never not got a cap on, you'll find clipping one of these to the bill is as easy as popping the top on a can of Schlitz. Plus it'll only run you like five bucks and change.

Vitamin Water

The brand VitaminWater was started by a man named Darius Bikoff. The idea of the vitamin water was very simple, while taking his daily dose of vitamins in the morning and washing them down with water, Bikoff had a simple, yet brilliant idea. His idea of combining your vitamins and water into one drink is a lot easier and more convenient for people.

Bikoff had little startup money to create the brand and build his business. Another brilliant idea of his was to sell parts of his company to celebrities. This not only gave him celebrity sponsors to build his brand image and awareness but it was a great marketing venture in the way that it was such a great idea for these celebrities to do. It gets their name out their and they are making money.

VitaminWater is a brand that created a team of people living and breathing the brand. It was built one person at a time, which is also the continuing goal of the brand. Partners of the brand include 50 cent, Jennifer Anniston,
tom brady, shaquille o?neal, tony parker, brian urlacher, david ortiz and tracy mcgrady.

By 2002, the Glacéau line of waters were the top selling enhanced water brand in the United States, with the company's Vitaminwater being its best selling product. In 2006, the company earned US$350 million in revenues. The company then began its global expansion, launching its products in the United Kingdom and Australia in 2008 and France in 2009.

Energy Brands is owned primarily by Bikoff, employees, and small investors. Rap artist Curtis Jackson—known as 50 Cent—obtained a 10% share of the company as part of an endorsement deal. 30% equity was sold to LVMH sometime in the 2000s, which in turn sold those shares. The shares eventually were sold to India-based Tata Group in August 2006, which held the shares until May 2007 when Coca-Cola Company purchased the company as an independent subsidiary, leaving its actual operations with its existing management including Bikoff.

DOGS CAN DETECT CANCER

The book, 'Paws & Effects' written by Sharon Sakson explains the healing power of dogs and real life stories of peoples pets being able to sniff out cancer in them. Through a dogs incredible sense of smell they are able to sense cancer and other illnesses in the human body.

One example in the book includes one dog that began to scratch and bite at its owner's mole (which turned out to be cancerous). Another example is when another dog went up to a man with heart trouble and rested on his chest.

There are even dogs that are trained to respond to those humans suffering from seizures, and one of the other points the book mentions is the importance of that human-dog bond and how more often than not, it is the dog which chooses the person and not the other way around.

Just to give a bit of my own background, there is no denial of dogs’ abilities when it comes to aiding humans. From their keen instincts to aiding the blind, dogs have certainly proven themselves to be worthy of the title of “man’s best friend”. Yet for me, cats have always been more mysterious and natural hunters and so for that, as well as their independence, they have always fascinated me more on a personal level. I can’t say that I’ve ever experienced any deep bond with a dog but I have experienced many with cats and I am no less an animal lover. I can certainly empathize with those who love their dogs.

Melinda Gates

Voted Second most creative person on Fast Company in 2010 because of her influence over the world's largest foundation is enormous -- Bill has said it wouldn't exist if it weren't for her. Maybe it should be called the Melinda & Bill Gates Foundation. She has championed not only big-picture, tech-oriented solutions to improve health and education over the long term but also more modest steps to help the poorest of the poor right now, such as distributing condoms. The foundation's latest surprise: funding health and education messages to be integrated into Viacom TV programming. Sneaky? Perhaps. Daring? For sure -- and that's what Gates, 44, expects of the foundation. "We will get out there and try something," she told Vogue this year. "If it doesn't work, we will try something else. And we will keep trying until we find something that works." -- by Jeff Chu

Tumblr vs. Blogger

I have been using blogger now for around 2 years and have no complaints however I have been noticing that alot of my friends are using Tumblr. For your blog website you want to have the correct publishing tool that works perfect for you. An informal poll on Twitter indicated that most people prefer Tumblr or can't decide and use both. After investigating Tumblr, I've decided that I prefer Blogger. Here's why:

-Limited Templates - there are a few cool options but then the rest are just different colors and backgrounds.

-Inconvenience - Tumblr automatically sends updates to your Twitter account and peruse recommended blogs. BLogger on the other hand is not automatic.
If you want your Twitter followers to know about your new entry, you have to notify them yourself. If you want to tell someone that you like their article, you have to post a remark saying that you liked it. Tedious perhaps, but there may be things or articles that you do not wish to share on twitter.

Pop Art Portrait Design

Very cool graphic image, something that I thought I could incorporate into my own pop art portrait paintings. Dulling the background and changing the image of the person into black and white or gray and then focusing on the eyes. By adding sunglasses to the picture I could customize the design and personalize them for each person.

CHANCE FOR LIFE ON NEWLY FOUND PLANET

Newly found planet Gilese, may be the new Earth. A team of astronomers from the University of California and the Carnegie Institute of Washington say they have found a planet like ours, 20 light years away (which is 120 trillion miles) from Earth, where the basic conditions for life are good. The chances for life on this planet are 100 percent," Steven Vogt, a UC professor of astronomy and astrophysics says. "I have almost no doubt about it." The planet is three times the size of Earth, but the gravity is similar.Dr. Elizabeth Cunningham, planetarium astronomer at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, says the discovery is a huge deal."It could have liquid water on the surface," she said. "That's the first step to find life."

The atmosphere and gravity are similar to Earth, Scientists say the highest average temperature is about -12 degrees Celcius (10 Fahrenheit), but they point out that the planet doesn't have a night and day - one side continually faces the star and the other side faces the darkness of space. This means one side is blazing hot and the other freezing cold.

Other planets near Gliese 581g have been discovered, but they are not habitable and are mainly comprised of gas. Gliese 581g, however, is a rocky planet.

It was discovered using the Keck telescope in Hawaii which has been observing the star Gliese 581 for 11 years.

"Keck's long-term observations of the wobble of nearby stars enabled the detection of this multi-planetary system," said Mario R. Perez, Keck program scientist at NASA headquarters in Washington.

Astronomers are excited this new planet was discovered so fast and relatively close by.

"I'm surprised we found one so fast," Cunningham said. "The implication is either we were very lucky or these planets could be relatively common."

Gliese 581g is in the constellation of Libra. While Earth takes 365 days to orbit our star, the sun, Gliese 581g orbits its star in 37 days.

Design Style Living

In simplest terms, Rooted Design for Routed Living is a design-build project, where designers-in-residence developed, prototyped and built new furniture for their residency programs, to be used for years to come.

The idea for the project originated from the observation that many artists travel from residency to residency, developing their practice in a string of different contexts. Though the lives of these artists may be considered rootless, the places they travel to provide many historical, regional, cultural roots to anchor them during their stay.

The Nordic Artists' Centre in Norway and A-I-R Laboratory at the Center for Contemporary Art at Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw have observed that this is often not true of the residences themselves, often generic and "too pragmatic." In response, the institutions arranged an exchange. Polish designers would take residence at the remote Nordic Artists' Center and Norwegian designers would visit the metropolitan A-I-R Lab, both designing furniture that reflected their experience and observations abroad.

Jonathan Ive

Jonathan Ive, an English designer and the Senior Vice President of Industrial Design at Apple Inc. He is the principal designer of the iMac, aluminum and titanium PowerBook G4, MacBook, unibody MacBook Pro, iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Ive was voted on website Fast Company 1st place in 100 most creative people for 2010.

The Sunday Times named Ive as one of Britain's most influential expatriates on 27 November 2005: "Ive may not be the richest or the most senior figure on the list, but he has certainly been one of the most influential as the man who designed the iPod."

Ive defined his overarching design principles as "simplicity, accessibility, honesty, and enjoyment."

Today, Apple represents the success of business and design, as $32 billion in sales last year attest. And Ive --together with CEO Steve Jobs, have created the most trendsetting products. Apple is notoriously secretive about its design process (even most Apple employees are barred from the company's design lab); Ive's made a huge impact on Apple and the business community, states Robert Brunner, who, as Apple's previous design chief, hired Ive at the company and recommended him as his successor.

"He likes to make perfect stuff," says Brunner, offering the first of three keys to Ive's success. That design perfection -- the first touch-screen smartphone, the dominant MP3 player, the first titanium laptop -- has become the benchmark by which companies in all industries judge themselves. "I've even had a plumbing company say, 'We want our showerhead to be our version of the iPod,' " says Brunner, now a partner at the design firm Ammunition. "Ive has this design ability combined with a craftsmanlike mentality."

The second key is Ive's understanding of the interplay between design and manufacturing. Even when Ive was just out of school, before he joined Apple, Brunner recalls, "he showed us his work, and I was amazed. He had taken a phone and come up with a radical design, but it was so refined it could have been manufactured right then." At Apple, Ive has taken those insights one step further. Consider the new MacBook, which is carved from a single piece of aluminum and demands aeronautics-caliber precision. "[Apple] had to reinvent its factories to make it," Brunner explains. "It's mind-boggling." While most companies create designs that can be manufactured with existing equipment and processes, Ive and his team meet the problem halfway, often overhauling manufacturing to get "perfect" products built on a mass scale.
